Youth Organized for Disaster Action (Y.O.D.A.)

Beginning in December 4, 2006 Schools in Alabama, Delaware, Georgia, Louisiana, Maryland, Mississippi, New Jersey, New York, North Carolina, Pennsylvania, and South Carolina will have an opportunity to develop their own Y.O.D.A. teams to connect disaster mitigation, preparedness, response, and recovery to their classroom curriculum.

  • Eligible applicants may apply for a maximum award of $5,000 for the first year and $10,000 for years two and three.
     
  • This Request for Proposal (RFP) is for the grant agreement period of March 15, 2007 through August 31, 2007. Subsequent funding will be based on completion of grant requirements.

Examples of the kinds of activities that are supported include engaging students in service-learning projects to develop school crisis plans, distribute preparedness kits, conduct school safety audits and drills, provide health education, inventory and maintain emergency supplies, or provide language assistance to non-English speaking populations, assist communities for the disabled, and help develop foster care options for pets. Activities may also include helping young people take an active role in identifying and addressing the needs associated with the current and future relief efforts in the Gulf, as long as those activities are connected to the curriculum and include the other elements of effective service-learning.
