Training and Technical Assistance

Lead by the International Center for Service Learning & Teacher Education at Clemson University, the Institute for Global Education and Service-Learning is the Atlantic Region Exchange Technical Assistance Center serving eleven states.

The Exchange is a project of the Council for Service-Learning Excellence, supported by the State Farm Companies Foundation in partnership with the National Youth Leadership Council. The National Service-Learning Exchange program supports service-learning programs in schools, colleges and universities, and community organizations across the country through peer-based training and technical assistance. If you need assistance implementing service-learning programs, have questions, or simply want to speak with someone who has "been there", you can utilize the Exchange as a resource.

If you are interested in becoming a Peer Mentor or would like a Peer Mentor to help you, please submit the Interest/Referral Form.

The Exchange Can

Link you with a local Peer Mentor who can provide customized information about how to strengthen your service-learning program. Peer Mentors are available by phone and/or e-mail to quickly respond to service-learning questions. Site visits, presentations, and faculty professional development workshops can be arranged in some cases.

Direct you to the right resource to respond to your immediate service-learning concern. Through a database of carefully selected resources, the staff will guide you to the appropriate person or organization. For example, if you need training beyond the availability or capacity of the Peer Mentors, we can connect you with the Exchange Regional Advisor who may provide training at your site on a cost recover basis.

Inform you about regional service-learning events and initiatives. The Exchange operates five Regional Centers across the country which coordinate, co-sponsor, and gather information about happenings in the Region. The Regional Centers will ensure that local needs are met as efficiently as possible through regional resources.

Enhance your professional development. An online newsletter on the Exchange web site supplies useful professional development tips and news from the field. National partner organizations and Regional Advisors work with the Peer Mentors to select stat-of-the-art materials for service-learning related areas. These resources are available to you through the Exchange web site and through your work with a Peer Mentor.

Facilitate a learning community advancing quality service-learning. The Exchange Regional Centers facilitate bimonthly professional development calls for Regional Advisors and Peer Mentors to explore the connections between service-learning and a variety of issues facing schools, colleges, universities, and communities.
