Learn and Serve America

Y.O.D.A. (Youth Organized for Disaster Action)

One of our country’s most valuable resources is its youth!

Y.O.D.A.-Youth Organized for Disaster Action, is a service-learning program that helps young people prepare their families, schools, and communities for unexpected emergencies and disasters. Y.O.D.A. began as a project of the Institute for Global Education and Service Learning in collaboration with the New Jersey Commission for National & Community Service, National Dropout Prevention Center and PennSERVE:  The Governor’s Office for Citizen Service.  Support for Y.O.D.A. comes from a Learn & Serve Grant from the Corporation for National and Community Service.

Y.O.D.A. addresses community safety concerns by engaging students in service-learning activities in their schools and communities. YODA provides students with a structured learning experience that allows them to enhance academic achievement, develop workplace-readiness skills, demonstrate active citizenship, and give back to their communities through service-learning while planning to respond to health, safety, and security concerns in their schools or communities, including natural disasters, school violence, medical emergencies, or acts of terrorism.

The Y.O.D.A. program began in twenty schools in Pennsylvania and New Jersey during the 2004-2005 school year. The YODA program has grown to include sixteen additional schools in the states of Pennsylvania, New Jersey, New York, South Carolina, Georgia, and Alabama. These schools represent urban, suburban, and rural communities and involve a variety of students from grades one through twelve. Students and community members benefit from the Service Learning projects that focus on safety and preparedness needs of the school and community.
